Peanut wood is a super unique type of petrified wood all the way from Australia. It is said that Peanut wood began its life as a conifer tree surrounded by shallow rivers. Once the trees died the surrounding rivers drifted the wood to the nearby ocean. Wood-loving marine clams that lived in the nearby salty seas would attach themselves to the drifting logs and settle in for a feast. They were able to excavate "tunnels" through the wood as they chomped away, leaving behind hollow cavities and spiral shaped borings. So all the whitish "peanuts" you see in this specimen are the ancient activities of these little marine critters. Pretty amazing!
